The message that someone is trying to communicate, for example in a book or play, is the idea or point that they are trying to communicate.
countable noun: A message is a piece of information or a request that you send to someone or leave for them when you cannot speak to them directly.
verb: If you message someone, you send them a message electronically using a computer or another device such as a mobile phone.

message in American English
