Hiss in American English ˈAlger (ˈældʒər ) 1904-96; U.S. public official: accused of espionage and convicted of perjury to make a sound like that of a prolonged s, as of a goose or snake when provoked or alarmed, or of escaping steam, air, etc. to say or indicate by hissing intransitive verb: to make or emit a sharp sound like that of the letter s prolonged, as a snake does, or as steam does when forced under pressure through a small opening noun: a hissing sound, esp. one made in disapproval transitive verb: to express disapproval of by hissing hiss in British English noun: a voiceless fricative sound like that of a prolonged s noun: Alger. 1904–96, US government official: imprisoned (1950–54) for perjury in connection with alleged espionage activities |
