a compass consisting of a motor-operated gyroscope whose rotating axis, kept in a horizontal plane, takes a position parallel to the axis of the earth's rotation and thus points to the geographical north pole instead of to the magnetic pole noun: a navigational compass containing a gyroscope rotor, that, when adjusted for the latitude and speed of the vessel or aircraft, indicates the direction of true north along the surface of the earth or communicates this information to one or more gyro repeat gyrocompass in British English noun: a nonmagnetic compass that uses a motor-driven gyroscope to indicate true north |
