an organization of European nations, originally, Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, for advancing economic integration and political cooperation: in 1993 it became the European Union noun: an association of W European countries that included the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), the European Economic Community, the European Parliament, and allied organizations.
