to alternate quickly and regularly the use of the tip and base of the tongue in playing a flute, trumpet, etc. to facilitate rapid articulation
intransitive verb: to interrupt the wind flow by moving the tongue as if pronouncing t and k alternately, esp. in playing rapid passages or staccato notes on a brass instrument
