an executive body of five men in the First Republic in France, given office Oct. 27, 1795, and ousted Nov. 9, 1799 designating or of a style of furniture, dress, etc. of the time of the Directoire, characterized by simple neoclassic lines adjective: noting or pertaining to the style of French furnishings and decoration of the mid-1790s, characterized by an increasing use of Greco-Roman forms along with an introduction, toward the end, of Egyptian motifs: usually includes the Consulate period noun Directoire in British English noun: the French Directory |
