a synthetic salt derived from an organic acid, C6H11NHSO3H, esp. the sodium or calcium salt, with an extremely sweet taste: formerly used as a sweetener noun: any of several chemical compounds used as a noncaloric sweetening agent in foods and beverages: banned by the FDA in 1970 as a possible carcinogen cyclamate in British English noun: a salt or ester of cyclamic acid. Certain of the salts have a very sweet taste and were formerly used as food additives and sugar substitutes |
