a complex sound articulated by the slow release of a stop consonant followed immediately by a fricative at the same place of articulation in the mouth: the English affricates are the voiceless (ch) as in batch ( IPA [ tʃ]) and the voiced (j) as in badge ( noun: a speech sound comprising occlusion, plosion, and frication, as either of the ch- sounds in church and the j- sound in joy transitive verb: to change the pronunciation of (a stop) to an affricate, esp. by releasing (the stop) slowly affricate in British English noun: a composite speech sound consisting of a stop and a fricative articulated at the same point, such as the sound written ch, as in chair |
