an infection caused by certain actinomycetes, that may result in bony degeneration of the jaws, and abscesses in the lungs, intestines, etc. of humans and other mammals noun: an infectious, inflammatory disease caused by Actinomyces israelii in humans and A. bovis in domestic animals, and characterized by lumpy, often suppurating tumors, esp., about the jaws actinomycosis in British English noun: a fungal disease of cattle and of cats and dogs, sometimes transmitted to humans esp by bites, characterized by a swelling of the affected part, most often the jaw or lungs |
